ALAGNA, ITALY FREERIDE SKIING OVERVIEW

Freeride skiing…it’s what every backcountry skier who comes to Europe wants but just didn’t know it. And Alagna, Italy has possibly the best of it. Freeride skiing is mostly a European term than describes a style of backcountry skiing that Europe is famous for. You could call it “lift served backcountry” but that just doesn’t give it justice considering the massive difference between European and North American ski resorts. Freeride skiing means using the extensive lift systems in the Alps to access massive amounts of backcountry ski terrain with perhaps some skinning and ski mountaineering involved. We are talking runs with five to six thousand feet of vertical.

Alagna, Italy, is at the end of a small valley on the Italian side on the Monte Rosa Massif. Situated next to Gressonay and the Aosta Valley, it has been for many years a well kept secret among hard core skiers and known as a paradise of untracked snow and long off piste runs. Serviced by one Gondola, a cable car and a couple chair lifts, the skiing is a mix of chutes and wide open glaciers sprinkled with some fun ski mountaineering challenges. Short tours off of the lifts open up massive amounts of terrain with something for everyone. One day may be mining untracked powder off the top lift and the next day a short skin to a rappell and untracked glacier skiing. The connected lift systems of Gressonay and Champoluc add even more terrain to explore.

There’s also the backcounty refugios that serve up a amazing Northern Italian cuisine for lunch and then the day is finished up with some apres ski at the local watering hole, the Bar des Guides.

We base in the quaint small Italian village of Alagna at a 4-star hotel. Alagna has a couple great restaurants and a couple bars. It’s a lot like stepping back in time. For serious skiers this is a special ski trip like no other. Few crowds, endless terrain and great snow await! Skiing how it should be.
