CHARLOTTE DOME CLIMB OVERVIEW

Charlotte Dome is probably the best moderate High Sierra rock climb, period. With over 1500 feet of stellar and solid granite rock climbing at no more than 5.8 in difficulty, you just can’t beat it. The 12-pitch South Face route of Charlotte Dome is one of the “50 classic climbs of North America” and deservedly so. Seemingly endless solid Sierra granite, big exposure, fun climbing and fantastic views make Charlotte Dome a must do.

Not climbed until 1970, due in part to it’s remote location in Kings Canyon National Park, by legendary climbers Galen Rowell, Chris Jones and Fred Beckey, they found the dome to be surprisingly full of hold and cracks. All these features allow for a fun moderate rock climb on relatively steep rock with great protection. Over the years Charlotte Dome has become a top goal of many High Sierra climbers.

We guide the Charlotte Dome climb as a private climb in a 3-day itinerary. The approach from the Eastern Sierra trailhead of Onion Valley over Kearsarge Pass is about 11 miles. We camp in a remote and beautiful climbers camp near the base of the climb. The second day is the climb of the South Face and we hike back out on the third day.

We climb Charlotte Dome climb at a maximum guide to guest ratio of 1:2.
