Clyde Minaret Southeast Face Overview

Clyde Minaret’s Southeast Face is justifiably one of the Fifty Classic Climbs of North America. A remote High Sierra location, a prominent summit and excellent climbing all combine to one of the best climbs in the High Sierra. This is true alpine rock climbing at it’s finest.

Clyde Minaret is the highest and most prominent of the Minarets in the Ritter Range. Easily seen from Mammoth Mountain, it is almost impossible to be a climber, view Clyde Minaret from afar and not want to climb it. First climbed by a strong team of climbers in 1963 that included Alan Steck, it quickly became an enduring classic. Commonly underestimated a climb of the Southeast Face of Clyde Minaret is a serious undertaking requiring good stamina and the ability to climb strenuous crack climbs quickly and efficiently. The descent from the summit of Clyde Minaret is a scrambling down climb and a rappel. For much of the season ice axe and crampons are required for the approach and descent.

There are two start options on the Southeast Face of Clyde Minaret…the original 5.6 start that brings the overall grade of the route to 5.8+ and the 5.10a direct start variation.

This climb is led by AMGA trained or certified rock and alpine guides who will be happy to share their many years of experience on the technical rock climbs of the Sierra Nevada mountains with you. Spending time with a qualified alpine rock guide is invaluable to safely devloping your alpine rock climbing skills.

We climb Clyde Minaret’s Southeast Face climb on a custom basis. You can choose your own dates at a maximum guide to guest ratio of 1:2.

Looking to climb Clyde Minaret via an easier route? We can also guide the Rock Route and Starr’s Route which are both exciting and exposed 4th class rock climbs.
