Crystal Crag North Arete Overview

Crystal Crag in the Mammoth Lakes area is perhaps the best training ground for climbing High Sierra peaks. Described by some as a “mini mountain climb”, Crystal Crag has it all from crack climbing, to Chimneys to slab climbing to a knife edge ridge.

The North Arete is the classic route on the crag and at 5.7 it is accessible to many beginner climbers. The climbing is never too difficult, but it is always exhilarating. After passing through the peak’s namesake crystal band on the North summit we do an alpine rock ridge traverse to the true summit before descending 4th class back to the base. The whole climb is done in a reasonable shorter day from the car.

This climb is led by AMGA trained or certified rock and alpine guides who will be happy to share their many years of experience on the technical rock climbs of the Sierra Nevada mountains with you. Spending time with a qualified alpine rock guide is invaluable to safely devloping your alpine rock climbing skills.

We climb Crystal Crag, North Arete climbs on a custom basis so you can choose your own dates and at a maximum guide to guest ratio of 1:2.
