MOUNT SHASTA CLEAR CREEK ROUTE SUMMIT CLIMB OVERVIEW

Mount Shasta, California's premier mountaineering objective. Our climb of the Clear Creek Route is a great late season beginner mountaineering objective for those who want to climb Mt. Shasta from late July till Labor Day. The Clear Creek climbing route is on the broad East flanks of Shasta and involves climbing scree and some loose rock usually interspersed with some snow fields. This climb may involve the use of crampons and ice axe.

In our 3 day Clear Creek climb we will take a more leisurely three days to climb to the Mt. Shasta summit. We believe three days provides more time to properly acclimate and learn all the necessary basic mountaineering skills. The success rate of a three-day Mt Shasta trip is much higher than on the two-day trips. Mountaineering instruction may include (depending on conditions, later season trips may not have enough snow for any ice axe and crampon use):

  • Ice axe and crampon use

  • Ice axe self arrest

  • Snow climbing technique

  • Basic rope travel

Along the way we strive to ensure personal attention, fine food and lots of fun. A great introduction into the world of mountaineering on beautiful Mt. Shasta. Come join us this season!

With our recent merger with Alpine Skills International we bring 40 years of experience guiding on Mount Shasta. We know Shasta and will strive to provide you with the most professional and fun experience possible. All of our lead guides have training from the American Mountain Guides Association.

MT SHASTA 3-DAY CLEAR CREEK ROUTE SUMMIT ITINERARY

Day 1
We meet in the town of Mount Shasta, Ca at 930am. The exact location will be in your confirmation materials. After a pack check and group gear distribution, we all drive to the wilderness trail head for the Clear Creek Route. Everyone is responsible for their own transportation to the trailhead. The drive to the trail head is on rough dirt roads and we may park well before the actual trail head. We then hike up to around 9000 feet near some springs where we establish a base camp for the evening. The afternoon is spent relaxing and acclimating as well as possibly learning ice axe and crampon techniques (depending on conditions) before enjoying a hearty dinner. We get to bed very early to prepare for our summit of Mt Shasta the next day

Day 2
Shasta summit day! We wake up early for our alpine start to climb Mount Shasta, probably around 2-3am. Climbing by headlamp, we make our way up the scree and rough trail of the Clear Creek route. After a beautiful sunrise we eventually arrive at the summit plateau. All that is left is the summit pinnacle after which we stand upon the summit of Mount Shasta (14,180 ft)! We then make our way back down to camp arriving in the afternoon where we can nap and rest before a hearty camp dinner. Since we do not have to hike out today, it gives us a more relaxed summit day schedule than on the 2-day trip. However, we still must maintain appropriate pacing throughout the day.

Day 3
After breakfast, we our camp we continue back to the Clear Creek trailhead, usually arriving around Noon.
