MT LANGLEY SUMMIT HIKE OVERVIEW

Summit Mount Langley, one of California’s fourteen thousand foot peaks, on this hiking adventure into the Cottonwood Lakes Basin. A great hike for those wishing to summit a California 14er and a good warm up for more challenging climbs such as Mt. Whitney’s mountaineer’s route. We spend most of the hike in the John Muir Wilderness in the High Sierra with part of summit day in Sequoia National Park.

We meet in the morning of the first day at the high elevation trail head at Horseshoe Meadows high above the town of Lone Pine, Ca. Then, it’s an easy hike into the stunning Cottonwood Lakes where we establish base camp for two nights. This is followed by a strenuous hike with lighter day packs, with some off trail hiking, to the summit of Mt. Langley and back to base camp. On the final morning we have a leisurely hike back to the trail head.

Along the way we will enjoy high alpine lakes, beautiful vistas and rewarding summit views. And if we are lucky, maybe even a Sierra bighorn sheep!

Mt Langley Summit Hike Itinerary

Mt Langley, Day 1

We meet at Horseshoe Meadows (10,000 ft)at 9am (exact details will be provided). After a gear check and introductions, we have a lovely and relatively easy half day hike into our basecamp in the beautiful Cottonwood Lakes basin, camping near a high alpine lake.

Mt Langley, Day 2

Summit day. After an early start, we don lighter weight day packs and slowly but steadily make our way up the good trail to New Army Pass. From there we enter Sequoia National Parka and descend just a little to pick up the rough Mt Langley summit trail, which at times becomes easy off trail hiking through boulders along the Langley summit plateau. Finally reaching the summit of Mt. Langley we have expansive view to the East into the Owens Valley and to the West in Sequoia National Park. We then descend back the way we came to our base camp for a well deserved rest by the Lake and great dinner.

Mt Langley, Day 3

A leasurely morning, we enjoy breakfast and then make our way hiking back through the high forest, back to the trail head usually arriving by early afternoon.

Itinerary subject to change & camp locations and distances each day remain flexible.
