Norman Clyde Peak, Twilight Pillar Climb Overview

The Twilight Pillar on Norman Clyde Peak in the magnificent Palisades region of the High Sierra is a sleeper classic alpine rock climb. Named in honor of the iconic early Sierra climber Norman Clyde, the peak’s best climb is the Twilight Pillar. So named because the last light of the day would light up the route as seen from Glacier Lodge far below where Clyde was a long time caretaker.

The climb is 12 pitches and the approach & descent somewhat complicated which makes for a long summit day. We guide the Twilight Pillar in two days. We approach to Finger Lakes the first day and then climb and descend back to the trailhead in a long second day. The climbing is never harder than 5.8, but it’s good to be solid at that grade!

One of the best pure alpine rock climbs in the Palisades region, the Twilight Pillar is not to be missed.

We climb the Norman Clyde Peak, Twilight Pillar climb at a maximum guide to guest ratio of 1:2.
