Sonora Pass was opened this past weekend making skiing back to the car possible again! Its going to be hot this weekend so think about alpine starts and afternoon beers. This is the weekend report for June 16th!

Welcome to our weekly climbing and backcountry skiing report for the state of California. Our goal is to provide a weekly single source of climbing and skiing conditions around the state. We hope you stay tuned!

Backcountry Skiing & Boarding

Eastern Sierra

Temps this week were normal with nightly freezing earlier in the week. This is welcome news for skiers and riders here on the Eastside and the corn harvest will return in earnest for a few days, at least. Snow levels have retreated to 1000' throughout most of the east side. We are experience a hot spell this weekend with temps in the high 70's at 1000'  and afternoon thunderstorms. Skiing from the car is back as Sonora Pass just opened up! No news on Tioga Pass.

SUMMARY: Look for sheltered aspects above 10,000' and definitely be dropping in before 10:00am.

Eastern Sierra

The snow pack is continuing to melt out quite fast and there is a flood warning for the Owen's River Valley. Be cautious  crossing streams this weekend.  Temps will be the in the low 100's all through the weekend.

Pine Creek Canyon is snow free, but heads up on rappels as there are seasonal waterfalls and streams at the base of some of the walls.  The temps will be in the 80's this weekend with a chance of thunderstorms all weekend.

Rock Creek is dry and has been in good climbing conditions for weeks. Mid day temps are starting to be a little warm, so seeking shade is a good idea. The river crossing is just a little hairy, so take it slow and watch your footing.  Patricia Bowl is still snowed in and the rock appears to be wet.

Clarks Canyon road is free of snow and the road is in good condition. The day time temps are going to be in the 80 this weekend.

The road to Crystal Crag is plowed to around Lake George. The walk up is still snowy and there might be patches of snow on the decent. North Arete is in great shape but the base sport climbs are perhaps two bolts shorter due to snow.

Be advised that the mosquitos, gnats, and biting flies are relentless in all climbing areas right now.

Yosemite Valley & Tuolumne Meadows

The climbing this weekend in Yosemite Valley is going to be a little warm this weekend with temps in the 80's and chance of t-storms all weekend.

Tuolumne Meadow is going to be closed for a little longer.   Yosemite National Park reported on June 6th, "National Park Service road crews (plowing eastbound) and Caltrans road crews (plowing westbound) have met at Tioga Pass. Within the park, road crews are working on parking lots, side roads, and portions of the road that are only plowed one lane wide. Crews are also removing debris from the roadway, culverts, and ditches. Three avalanche zones are still active. Road opening is not imminent; much work still remains before the road will be safe to open. The Tioga Road is closed from South Fork Bridge (6.5 miles east of Tuolumne Grove/NatureBridge in the Crane Flat area) to Tioga Pass"
