California Climbing and Backcountry Skiing Report-January 26th

It looked a lot like winter this past week and half with multiple storms and powder days, but the triple R (ridiculous resilient ridge) is building throughout next week bringing above average temperatures.  This next weekend looks like it will be great for people who want to slash pow in the backcountry and go climbing in t-shirts the next day.

Welcome to our weekly climbing and backcountry skiing report for the state of California. Our goal is to provide a weekly single source of climbing and skiing conditions around the state. We hope you stay tuned!

Backcountry Skiing & Boarding

Eastern Sierra

The storm forecasted this week came in stronger than projected dropping 12 inches at 10,000'  and 6 inches down to 7000'.  Pretty much every where is going to be good for skiing. Its still low tide out there so look our for sharks at lower elevation.  This weekends forecast looks great for touring with mild conditions and low winds.  ESAC will continue to publish daily avalanche advisories, so make sure to read the report before you venture into the backcountry.

Ice Climbing

Lee Vining & June Lake Ice Climbing

June Lake is growing again but next weeks weather looks quite warm, so the ice might be gone by next week.

Lee Vining Ice is in better condition then most though it might be given the dry nature of the winter thus far. Chouinard Falls has enough ice for several parties to enjoy. The approach has some snow, so take it slow and watch your step. The ice above Chouinard's looks nice as well, and is a good option for those arriving later in the day. There is no ice on the Bard-Harrington Wall or in the Narrows and very little, if any climbable ice on Main Wall.

Rock Climbing

Joshua Tree

Beautiful weather in Joshua Tree this weekend. Despite a little wind, it should be a wonderful weekend for climbing.

Eastern Sierra

Daytime temps in the high 50s and overnight temps in the high 30s will have most looking for sun. Deadman Summit areas will probably shut down after these storms for a while.

Yosemite Valley & Tuolumne Meadows

Sunshine and mid 50's in the Valley this weekend through next week.

Tuolumne is closed for the season, but for those that are adventurous the skiing could be in great shape next week.
