California Climbing and Backcountry Skiing Report-January 31st

Spring like weather has taken hold throughout California and Winter doesn't look set to return for a few weeks. We're still offering Ullr burnt skis and odd dances in increasingly futile attempts to appease the wintry deity.

Welcome to our weekly climbing and backcountry skiing report for the state of California. Our goal is to provide a weekly single source of climbing and skiing conditions around the state. We hope you stay tuned!

Backcountry Skiing & Boarding

Eastern Sierra

It's been a week since snow fell and it has gone through some pretty dramatic changes since. Cold snow can still be found at the highest elevations in the most sheltered, Northern aspects; the couloirs in the Sawtooth Ridge area continue to be worthwhile outings.
On the few sunny aspects that are holding snow there will likely be some corn to harvest this week.

Only have the weekend and want to get the best backcountry turns possible. Check out our Guided Backcountry Skiing Tours.

The backcountry skiing is going to be good in the Carson Pass and Mt Rose area.

Mount Shasta

As usual, Mount Shasta is the snowiest place in the state. Windy weather this weekend will probably make snow conditions funky. Those winds are supposed to move out early next week, which should result in some great skiing throughout the mid-week.

Ice Climbing

Lee Vining & June Lake Ice Climbing

Horsetail Falls in June Lake continues to be climbable on the Left side, Right side and North Gully. One of our guides witnessed a large sheet of ice fall from high up this past weekend at about 1:30 pm. Warm temps and lots of flowing water mean that Horsetail will continue to be appropriate for small groups only.

Lee Vining Ice is still about the same as it has been for a few weeks. Main Wall is too thin to lead, or TR. Chouinard's has leadable ice between Comrade's Corner and the Tree Route. Ice at the top of the Canyon offers an alternative venue for those keen on avoiding other groups.

Take your ice climbing to the next level and check out our Ice climbing Courses 2017/18

Alpine Climbing

High Sierra Climbing

Warm temps this week and disturbingly little snow will probably attract some interest from those keen on Winter ascents of Alpine routes.

Rock Climbing

Joshua Tree

T-shirt weather in Joshua Tree this weekend. Dang, it looks nice down there.

Eastern Sierra

Perfect climbing weather throughout the Eastern Sierra this week. Our Office Manager was climbing at ORG this past weekend in a t-shirt--in the SHADE! Deadman Summit area crags have some snow lingering around the base, but the rocks are dry.

Owens River Gorge NOAA Weather Forecast

Yosemite Valley & Tuolumne Meadows

Sunshine and high 50's to low 60's in the Valley this weekend through next week.

Tuolumne is closed for the season, but for those that are adventurous the skiing could be in great shape next week.
