AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course Overview

Looking for a possible career as a rock climbing guide? Are you an outdoor educator who manages top roping sites? The AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course (SPI) is a great place to start your training as a rock climbing guide or to get a certification to manage top rope site. The SPI course and certification is designed for those who teach rock climbing courses and manage rock climbing top rope sites up to one pitch in length. It also satisfies the need for a certification that is required in many locations and business’ around the country. And it just makes you a better climber!

The AMGA is the only guide certification body in the United States that is internationally recognized by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA). So the AMGA SPI course is the only top rope management course & certification that is internationally recognized.

The SPI course is a 3-day, 27 hour course with a 6:1 maximum instructor to student ratio. There is a 2-day assessment exam that must be taken at another time to receive your SPI certification. The certification lasts for 3 years after which it must be re-certified with another assessment. This course is based out of Mammoth Lakes, but locations around the Eastern Sierra from Bishop up to Mammoth Lakes will be used.

 

 
 
 

EXPERIENCE/PREREQUISITES

  • 18 years old

  • 12 Months climbing experience

  • Have traditional leading experience with a min of 15 graded rock climbing routes

  • Have the ability to easily climb 5.8 on a top rope

  • Must be a current AMGA member prior to starting the course
