Viren Perumal is a Rock, Ice and Alpine Guide living and working year round in the Eastern Sierra of California. Viren was born in Thailand, and then settled in the Southeastern US where as a youth he learned to climb and kayak whitewater.
Viren holds a Masters degree in Biology/Eco-physiology and has worked as an outdoor professional in several aspects of the industry including raft guide, wilderness therapist, ski patroller, college professor, search and rescue worker, ambulance crew, outdoor educator, outdoor retail specialist, biology researcher, and for the past 10 years a full time mountain guide.
Viren has guided for over 20 years and has guided and climbed in the North Cascades, Canadian Rockies, Alaska Range, Red Rocks, the Himalaya and South American volcanos
He moved to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in 2004, where he fell in love with granite cracks and alpine peaks. Viren has guided rock, ice, and alpine ascents throughout the High Sierra from his home base of Mammoth Lakes, CA. Viren earned AMGA Rock Guide certification in 2011, and is an AMGA Assistant Alpine Guide. Viren has completed an AIARE Pro 2 avalanche program and is a course provider for the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor programs.
When not guiding, Viren trains and certifies other outdoor professionals in Wilderness Medicine through NOLS Wilderness Medicine and he serves as Adjunct Faculty for the Prescott College Adventure Education Program. Viren has infectious enthusiasm, a generous heart, and an irresistible way of sharing his stoke for climbing and being in the mountains. His favorite place in the world to climb is the Eastern Sierra, where he now lives with his wife Julie, their daughter Arwa, and their dog Sladey.
