Rock Climbing in Mammoth Lakes:
Crystal Crag Rock Climbing
Perhaps the best training climb for the bigger High Sierra technical climbing peaks and right here in Mammoth Lakes. Referred to by many as a “mini mountain climb”, Crystal Crag offers a beginner multi pitch rock climb and ridge traverse that has everything you’ll find on the larger Sierra Peaks, just less of it. And its only a 45-minute hike from the parking lot at Lake George.
At only 5.7 in difficulty, the North Ridge rock climb is the most popular route and brings you to the spectacular North Summit that is almost entirely composed of quartzite, hence the name. Along the Eastern base of Crystal Crag you can find some excellent granite sport climbs in the 5.9-5.11 range.

The High Sierra Alpine Rock Climbing
Pretty much endless, the granite peaks and spires of the High Sierra comprise some of the best alpine rock climbing in the world…period. Trailheads for such famous rock climbs such as Bear Creek Spire are only about 50 minutes from Mammoth while some of the excellent alpine rock climbs in the Temple Crag/Palisades or Mount Whitney Zone are about 1.5 - 2 hours away.
