Matterhorn Peak North Arete Overview

Matterhorn Peak’s North Arete is the Northern High Sierra’s classic moderate rock climb. At the grade of 5.7 it is a great first Sierra Nevada technical rock climb and easily done in just two days.

Towering above Twin Lakes near the town of Bridgeport, Ca., Matterhorn Peak has long been an objective of Sierra Mountaineers for over 60 years. Located on the spectacular Sawtooth Ridge which is one of the most alpine areas of the Northern High Sierra. The approach from our copy base camp usually involves some snow climbing an may require the use of crampons and ice axe… a very all round alpine climbing experience!

This climb is led by AMGA trained or certified rock and alpine guides who will be happy to share their many years of experience on the technical rock climbs of the Sierra Nevada mountains with you. Spending time with a qualified alpine rock guide is invaluable to safely devloping your alpine rock climbing skills.

We climb Matterhorn Peak, North Arete climbs on a custom basis so you can choose your own dates and at a maximum guide to guest ratio of 1:2.

 


EXPERIENCE & PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous rock climbing experience required with the ability to quickly follow outdoor rock climbs up to at least 5.8 in difficulty.

  • Previous backpacking experience highly recommended.

  • Previous off trail hiking & scrambling experience on uneven terrain required.

  • Very good to excellent physical condition required.

Climbing a Sierra peak is strenuous! You must train accordingly. Feel free to contact us for training recommendations.
